Manuel Sobrinho Simões is Emeritus Professor of Pathology of the Medical Faculty and Director of the IPATIMUP since its creation in 1989. He co-created i3S in 2008 under the auspices of Porto University. He chaired the National Council of Clinical Academic Centers and chaired the Board of the National Agency for Evaluation and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES) between 2017 and 2021.
At present, Manuel Sobrinho Simões is also non-executive Administrator of Foundation Serralves and Member of EAPN – European Anti-Poverty Network. He is co-author of 400 scientific publications which have given rise to more than 16000 citations (h factor >66). His main interests are oncobiology and thyroid cancer. Manuel Sobrinho Simões carries about 300 diagnostic consultations per year for foreign institutions.
Manuel Sobrinho Simões was President of the European Society of Pathology from 1999 to 2001, after having been Secretary from 1989 to 1997. He helped creating EUROCELLPATH (European Courses on Cellular Pathology) and the European School of Pathology (EScoP), and he has been co-organizing Courses on Thyroid Tumours in Europe, South America, Asia and USA since 1992. He has co-authored many chapters of three editions (1988, 2006, 2017) of the WHO Book on Endocrine Tumours and is participating in the 5th edition scheduled for 2022. Manuel Sobrinho Simões has been elected by his peers “The most influent pathologist” in a survey conducted in 2015 by “The Pathologist”.
