Rui Manuel Cardoso Vaz born at Porto in 1953, graduated in Medicine in 1976, Neurosurgeon since 1988 and Director of the Neurosurgical Department at CHUSJ since 2000. At Faculty of Medicine of University of Porto obtained a Master's degree in 1992, a Doctorate in 1997, Aggregation in 2010 and is Invited Full Professor since 2012.
He was President of the Portuguese Society of Neurosurgery (1998-2000), of the Board of the Specialty College of the Medical Association (2015-2018), founded and chaired the Society of Neurosurgery of Portuguese Language (2000-2003), being Vice President of the Council of Representatives of the Faculty of Medicine since 2019.
In 2002 he started in Portugal the technique of deep brain stimulation which he later developed, work that was the basis for the bid for the 2010 BIAL Award entitled “Deep brain stimulation: from the treatment of Parkinson's disease to a new vision of brain functioning” with subsequent publication in a book.
He also published the book “Traumatismos Cranio Encephalicos” (4 editions), four monographs and about 150 scientific papers, having been invited as a speaker / lecturer at about 120 national and international scientific meetings.
