The BIAL Foundation, in partnership with the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS), is promoting the Nuno Grande Doctoral Scholarship 2022 in honour of the prestigious medical doctor, researcher and professor who founded ICBAS and was connected to the Foundation for over 20 years.
Created to support research work in the areas of Fundamental Sciences, the Nuno Grande PhD Scholarship 2022, worth 25 thousand euros, aims to promote the acquisition of differentiating academic skills for the teaching of Medicine by medical doctors who, collaborating in teaching, are or intend to develop their studies under the scope of the Doctoral Programme in Medical Sciences taught at ICBAS.
The initiative to create the new Scholarship came from Nuno Grande's family, through his daughter Cristina Grande, and was immediately welcomed by ICBAS and the BIAL Foundation. It was announced on the 47th anniversary of ICBAS, which dedicated the celebration to its founder Nuno Grande, which have also been elected by the University of Porto as the Eminent Figure for 2022.
Nuno Grande was involved in the genesis of the constitution of the BIAL Foundation, where he held the position of member of the Board from its creation in 1994 until 2007, having helped to write the Foundation’s statutes. He has also been on the Jury of several editions of the BIAL Award since 1984.
Luís Portela recognises the remarkable role that the Professor had in the history of the Foundation but assumes that the relationship between them went beyond the institutional scope. “There are very few people whom I have classified throughout life as my Masters. Undoubtedly however, Professor Nuno Grande is one for me, for his inner strength, his integrity, the positive and constructive way he knows how to be in life, his ability to accomplish and, above all, his ability to love”.
For the President of the BIAL Foundation it makes perfect sense for the Foundation to join ICBAS in promoting this Scholarship. "This is our way of honouring this great medical doctor, great teacher, great citizen, great householder, great friend, but, above all, great heart, who inspired and will continue to inspire several generations of medical doctors."
