Applications are open for the Maria de Sousa Award 5th edition - 2025, promoted by the Portuguese Medical Association and the BIAL Foundation to honour the physician and great researcher Maria de Sousa. The deadline for applications is May 31.
The Maria de Sousa Award aims to award and support young Portuguese researchers, aged 35 or under, with scientific projects in Health Sciences, including a mandatory internship in an international center of excellence.
In total, the award will distribute up to €150.000 to a maximum of five winners. Applications must be submitted individually. Applications by groups of researchers are not accepted.
For the neuroscientist Rui Costa, who is once again the President of the Jury, “this is an Award with a special meaning because Prof. Maria de Sousa always wanted to help young researchers to think differently, to become international, and to challenge the very frontiers of knowledge, so we want to encourage young Portuguese researchers to apply and show us their talents”.
In addition to Rui Costa (Allen Institute, USA), the jury is composed of researchers who were very close to Maria de Sousa: Maria do Carmo Fonseca (Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon), Miguel Castelo-Branco (Center for Biomedical Imaging and Translational Research at the University of Coimbra), Joana Palha (School of Medicine of the University of Minho), and João Relvas (Institute for Research and Innovation in Health Sciences of the University of Porto).
