Starting in the 2025 edition, the Nuno Grande Doctoral Scholarship (BDNG) will have national coverage, allowing PhD students in Fundamental Health Sciences from Portuguese universities to apply. Furthermore, instead of just one €25,000 scholarship per edition, as was the case until now, three €25,000 scholarships will be awarded in each edition.
In October 2025, the new edition of the BDNG will open applications to any national or foreign citizen, holding a degree or master’s in Medicine, who, while collaborating in medical education or affiliated with any Portuguese medical school, is enrolled in a doctoral programme in the field of Fundamental Health Sciences at a Portuguese university.
“This decision to extend the Nuno Grande Doctoral Scholarship nationwide further honours the memory of Professor Nuno Grande, whose vision was profoundly comprehensive and inclusive. We want to encourage young medical doctors from all over the country to embrace scientific research as an essential part of their training”, says Luís Portela, chairman of the BIAL Foundation.
It is worth recalling that, in previous editions, scholarships were awarded to research projects by PhD students from the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS) in different areas of Fundamental Health Sciences: in 2024, to Leonardo Moço, in the area of haemato-oncology; in 2023, to João Moura, in the area of encephalitis; and in 2022, to Daniel Oliveira, in the area of Lupus.
The Nuno Grande Doctoral Scholarship is a joint initiative by the family of Professor Nuno Grande, the BIAL Foundation, and ICBAS.
